I have mentioned before that one of my favorite subjects to photograph is children. With younger kids, I love that they have no inhibitions, and that if they want to chase ladybugs, then we will get some great pictures of chasing ladybugs. If it is mud that has their attention, then mud it will be. They have more control then they realize, as much as we might want to think otherwise. But that is the part I appreciate and look to capture - their personality and individuality, as well as their physical adorableness. I approach photographing new born and very young children in much the same way. There are many examples online of very posed new born portraits - a baby fast asleep in a flower pot or propped up with her hands under their chin, and they are very creative images. But my interest is in the documentary aspect of photography. I'm drawn to and look to capture all that is real - movement, expression, emotion, personality, environment - images that are forever a reminder of this young stage of life and how she kicks as she figures out how to control her legs, or how she yawns when he is ready to sleep.
Vivian Taylor was born in early February, and these photos were shot within a week of her arrival. She was awake and alert when I arrived, and for most of the time I was there, she laid on a blanket on the floor and watched and kicked and punched, soaking in this new world she is now a part of. When she was done with that and ready for a nap, her mom moved her to a day bed under the window. Vivian loves the sun! She immediately was content and was soon asleep.
This was a very fun photo session, and one I approached with a different perspective than normal, as I will soon be a dad again. It has been 9 years since my youngest daughter was born, and although you never forget your children as brand new babies, you do kind of forget to remember. Seeing this beautiful baby at only a handful of days old reminded me of the amazing experiences ahead for my family, and really hit home how truly excited I am! August can't come fast enough.
Congratulations Ben and Christa on your Beautiful baby girl!!!
