If you're familiar with Petaluma at all, chances are you have heard of Sax's Joint. Family owned and operated, this 1950's themed diner is located on Petaluma Blvd South right near downtown. Every now and again I get phone calls from businesses that are interested in promotional images. But this was the first time I was familiar with the business I was going to do work for, as I have eaten there a few times, and very recently. I was excited! They have a banner on the wall as you walk in that says "Taking you back to a simpler time...where home cooking, customer service, and a smile were still important" I love that...and who can't use a dose of simplicity in todays world, especially over a delicious home cooked meal!
Sax's Joint serves breakfast and lunch and closes at 4. So we scheduled the shoot for 4 PM on a Tuesday. I was concerned about light at that time of day, as the diner faces west. But this particular day brought a beautiful layer of high clouds that created a nice soft light. Luck was on our side. Not only did we have great light, we also had beautiful cars...2 of them! I knew cars were going to be a part of the shoot, but these cars were amazing and perfectly restored. I snapped a few pictures of the cars in front of the restaurant as I walked in, getting more and more excited for all that was coming together.
Any remaining nervousness dissipated when I met Kimberly, Tiffany and their mother "Me-Maw". They are the owners of Sax's Joint. Their energy and enthusiasm was great to work with and made creating these images an incredibly fun experience. We first shot out in front of the restaurant, with composition revolving around those beautiful cars. To get the needed composition, I had to be out in the street. Petaluma Blvd South is not the busiest street, but is far from a slow street. Frogger was referenced a few times :-). Thankfully, all drivers were cautious and supportive, with several cars honking and waving as they passed. We finished the session inside the diner with shots of the owners behind the counter, and a few with them on the counter.
I want to thank Kimberly, Tiffany and Me-Maw for using me for their promotional imagery. And if you haven't yet been to Sax's Joint, I recommend you give them a visit. I'm confident it won't be the only time you eat there.
